Update on Compassionate Systems Leadership
The Ministry of Education and Child Care has recently provided HELP with funding to build capacity for Compassionate Systems Leadership (CSL) in schools and districts across BC, as an extension of our tradition of working with community members and policy makers to create environments where children thrive. Led by Joanne Schroeder, CSL is a framework that seeks to create more compassionate, humane and child-centered systems.
We are excited to share that Kinwa Bluesky will be the keynote speaker for Vancouver Public Library (VPL)’s upcoming Storytime Conference, Read, Sing, Engage! This professional development conference will be led by VPL’s professional children’s librarians on November 19 and is open to early childhood educators, childcare providers and adults working with children in the community. Don't sleep on this — the application deadline is November 4!
National Child Day is coming up on November 20! Be sure to mark your calendars for two great events taking place leading up to the day. UNICEF Canada is hosting their Youth Activism Summit on November 14, and Children First Canada’s National Child Day event #8MillionRising will take place the following day on November 15. Both events are free and open to all!
A group of researchers led by Tonje Molyneux have found that social and emotional learning (SEL) in primary school can be supported through outdoor learning (OL), integrating SEL more deeply into their teaching practice.
This year’s Report Card on Physical Activity for Children and Youth by ParticipACTION highlights early findings on how COVID-19 impacted movement behaviours for children and youth in Canada, identifying opportunities that were lost and found during the pandemic.
HELP is seeking a Web Application Developer who will be responsible for developing, designing, and maintaining databases, as well as developing code for cleaning and aggregating data from an online e-system for community based reports. Learn More

The EDI Wave 8 data summary for BC will be released later this month. Community and neighbourhood level data will be available through a brand new interactive online dashboard in the months to follow. Stay tuned for these official launch days!

Cross-ministry roundtable
Our leadership team recently met with a cross-ministry advisory in Victoria for a roundtable discussion about how HELP’s data can help inform policy development. Discussions will continue through these regular meetings with the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions, the Ministry of Education and Child Care, and the Ministry of Health.
