This month, we invite you to join us in celebrating Dr. Mariana Brussoni, recipient of the Joe L. Frost Award! We also share a number of great resources regarding child and youth mental health and substance use in honour of Mental Health Week, as well as launch our next MDI webinar, Well-being & Healthy Habits of Early Adolescents.
Just Announced! MDI Data Trends Webinar
Join us on June 13 for Well-being & Healthy Habits of Early Adolescents: MDI Trends — a webinar led by Middle Years Development (MDI) scientific lead Dr. Eva Oberle. Learn about the latest MDI data collected this school year (2023-24) from children in grades 4 through 8 across BC. Hear about children’s well-being over the last 5 years, along with other topics of interest including sleep, screen time and social media use, and active transportation habits. This webinar will also unveil upcoming improvements to the MDI Data Dashboard — an online tool providing access to MDI data maps and trends over the last 6 years at the school district and neighbourhood levels — you don't want to miss it!
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Mariana Brussoni, Director of HELP, on receiving the 2024 Joe L. Frost Award for Distinguished Research from the US Play Coalition! This award is given in recognition of a body of exceptional research that has enhanced and expanded the study of play.
This Mental Health Week, we invite you to explore Agenda Gap — a mental health promotion program for youth aged 12-19 and led by HELP faculty member Dr. Emily Jenkins. Agenda Gap has been implemented in partnership with school- and community-based sites across multiple provinces, empowering youth to lead policy advocacy to strengthen conditions for good mental health and well-being for young people and their communities. Click below to learn more about Agenda Gap via Wellstream—another initiative led by Dr. Jenkins—on their brand new website!
A new resource, Language Matters: An Introductory Guide for Understanding Mental Health and Substance Use, is now available for educators, administrators, school support staff, and school community partners. This guide seeks to develop a common language and shared understanding of mental health and substance use, in an effort to improve mental health literacy and reduce stigma.
"We need to be comfortable with risk—our lives are inherently risky". HELP Director Dr. Mariana Brussoni joined the Let's Move Canada podcast with Dr. Suzanne Beno for a discussion about the Canadian Paediatric Society's recent position statement, and the importance of risky play for children's development.
In case you missed it, a recording of our webinar Poverty, Childhood Experiences & Well-being in BC is now available for viewing, along with presentation slides and resources shared throughout the event.Access Now

This prestigious event connected young researchers in BC with current members of the Parliament to build bridges between science and policy-making. It was an excellent opportunity for researchers to learn how policy is made and how research can be designed and communicated in ways that are most useful and actionable to inform policy. Learn More
