Turning Data into Community Action in South Vancouver
Our latest Data in Action story explores how South Vancouver Neighbourhood House used data gathered by HELP, through the EDI and MDI, to create tangible change for families and children. Learn about local initiatives that are fostering collaboration and building stronger community support systems.
Meet Mary Burgaretta and Marilyn Maychak, the newest members of the Aboriginal Steering Committee (ASC) at HELP. Discover how their deep-rooted connections to Indigenous communities and extensive experience make them invaluable additions to the ASC, which is dedicated to advancing the well-being and developmental outcomes of First Nation, Inuit and Métis children and youth in BC.
Building Connections Through the Fall Roots Circle
Delve into the learnings from the Fall Roots Circle, a collaboration between HELP, the Indigenous Research Support Initiative, and the Centre for Excellence in Indigenous Health. The group welcomed Dr. Kimberly Huyser and Nicole Dawydiuk, who shared knowledge of pandemic preparedness, community-based research, and digital storytelling and (re)connection, offering insight into unique methods for thoughtful engagement with Indigenous communities.
The 2024 BC Child Poverty Report Card from First Call Child and Youth Advocacy Society provides an update on family and child poverty in the province, noting a "sharp and troubling rise in child poverty across British Columbia." This year's report card includes a Special Insert on the experiences of single mothers navigating the challenges of poverty, along with actionable recommendations for change.
Jonathan Haidt, author of international bestseller The Anxious Generation, highlighted the top 5 most read essays of 2024 from his popular substack, After Babel. Among the top 5 essays is Why Children Need Risk, Fear, and Excitement in Play, by HELP's director Dr. Mariana Brussoni.
BC Aboriginal Child Care Society (BCACCS)'s Annual Training Conference will take place on February 20-22, 2025 and will feature ASC member Lori Huston, as a keynote speaker. Fellow ASC members Sheila Grieve, Duane Jackson, and Laranna Scott will also present at the event!
We are thrilled to share that Dr. Mariana Brussoni, has been nominated for a YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the Research, Sciences & Technology category. Please join us in celebrating this well-deserved recognition of her impactful work!
